LBI Waterfront Winterization Checklist: Pre-Freeze Prep

Dock, Bulkhead & Boat: Pre-Freeze Waterfront Prep (Beach Haven West to Waretown)

Late-November cold snaps can sneak up on lagoon and bayfront owners. This LBI waterfront winterization checklist covers the specifics most generic guides miss—so your lines, hardware, and shore power are ready before the first skim of ice. Use it now to prevent chafe, corrosion, and avoidable repairs.

LBI Waterfront Winterization Checklist: Lines & Fenders

  • Swap to winter lines with slight extra length and elasticity for blow-outs and nor’easters.

  • Double spring lines and add chafe guards anywhere a line rubs.

  • Hang fenders lower for fixed bulkheads; floating docks ride differently as winds swing NW.

Bubblers & Ice Eaters: Aim for Flow, Not Guesswork

  • Angle units so warmer bottom water moves across hull lows and along the bulkhead face.

  • Stage upwind of trouble spots (pilings, platforms, PWC lifts).

  • Test GFCI/ELCI-protected outlets before the first freeze; mark open water for safety.

Shore Power & Corrosion: Quick Tests, Big Payoffs

  • Inspect plugs, inlets, cords for heat discoloration or green corrosion bloom; replace if questionable.

  • Confirm polarity and test ELCI/GFCI at the pedestal.

  • Remove non-essential chargers to cut risk and phantom draw.

Cleats, Bulkhead Fasteners & Cap Rails

  • Back out a sample fastener on ladders or dock hardware; schedule repairs if you see rust or waterlogged wood.

  • Tighten through-bolts and add backing washers where missing.

  • Seal cap-rail gaps that invite ice-jack damage.

PWC, Kayaks & Canoes: High, Dry, and Strapped

  • Lift PWCs or move ashore; drain cooling passages per the manual.

  • Rack kayaks/canoes above splash zone; flip hulls, use breathable covers.

  • Redundant tie-downs so a single strap failure doesn’t unravel your plan.

Deck Hardware: Rinse & Lube Before the Freeze

  • Fresh-water rinse hinges, zippers, latches, snaps; lightly lube with marine-safe product.

  • Grease winches and wheel pulleys now; avoid springtime seize-ups.

Yard-Side Hose Bibs & Irrigation

  • Shut interior valves, open exterior bibs, and bleed residual water.

  • Disconnect hoses so fittings don’t split.

  • Blow out irrigation zones, including drip lines near the bulkhead.

Inland Twist: Sheds & Yard Gear (Non-Waterfronts)

  • Drain or stabilize fuel in mowers, trimmers, small pumps.

  • Elevate storage boxes to dodge freeze-thaw floor moisture.

  • Coil hoses and store indoors to extend service life.
