Protect Your Home: Prevent Frozen Pipes This Winter

As winter sets in, extreme low temperatures and strong winds can put your home at serious risk—especially when it comes to frozen pipes. When pipes freeze, they can burst, leading to extensive and costly water damage. The good news? Much of this damage is completely preventable with a few proactive steps taken now.

Our friends at Great Bay Insurance recommend the following preventative measures to help protect your home during cold weather:

Simple Steps to Prevent Frozen Pipes

  1. Keep your heat on
Make sure your thermostat is set to no lower than 60°F, even if you’re away from home.
  2. Close garage doors
Keeping garage doors closed helps maintain warmer temperatures around plumbing lines that may run through or near the garage.
  3. Open cabinet doors
Open bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing, especially under sinks.
  4. Seal air leaks
Check for and seal air leaks near pipes, particularly around windows, doors, and exterior walls.
  5. Insulate exposed pipes
Insulate pipes in attics, crawl spaces, and those located close to outside walls to reduce the risk of freezing.
  6. Remove and store outdoor hoses
Disconnect, drain, and store outdoor hoses to prevent freezing and damage to both the hose and the pipe connection.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

Taking these simple precautions now can save you from major repairs and disruptions later. Winter weather can be unpredictable, but protecting your home doesn’t have to be.

Stay warm—and stay protected! ❄️🏠
