Personal Umbrella and Excess Liability Insurance Coverage

Excess liability insurance coverage, often referred to as umbrella excess liability insurance, provides additional protection should a judgement against you exceed the liability limits of your existing auto or homeowner’s policy. Liability insurance on a homeowner’s policy cannot exceed $500,000, or $250,000 per person, while auto insurance is limited to $500,000 per accident. That coverage alone may not be enough protection in today’s litigious environment.

An excess liability policy increases your personal liability limits by one to five million dollars above your current auto, boat or home coverage and covers many items not covered in your homeowner’s policy, as long as it is not specifically excluded from your personal umbrella and excess liability insurance policy.

Umbrella and excess liability insurance provides:

  • Protection for covered claims by others for personal injury or property damage caused by you, members of your family or household or hazards on your property for which you are legally liable
  • Personal liability coverage for occurrences on or off your premises
  • An additional layer of protection above your primary auto policy against auto-related liabilities
  • Protection against non-business-related personal injury liabilities, such as slander, libel, wrongful eviction or false arrest
  • Legal defense costs for a covered loss, including lawyer fees and associated court costs
  • Worldwide coverage—no matter where you go—except for situations involving foreign ownership of dwellings or cars
